"One lie can spread so quickly. We had to find the truth"
Using a combination of CCTV footage, social media, police interview recordings, news coverage and other archival materials, the documentary traces the steps of the murdered 21-year-old British tourist Grace Millane, leading to what happened on the night she met with a tinder date in 2018, while solo travelling in Auckland, New Zealand. The film presents raw and unfiltered evidence in retelling Grace’s story and working closely with director Helena Coan, we wanted to reflect this in the graphics needed to help shape and tell the victims story.
As lead designer, one angle we explored was the fact that Grace’s phone was never recovered. Being a crucial piece of evidence, by incorporating her social media posts from when she was alive from the police investigation and presenting them within the film, we visually placed them in a dark void, suggesting that the phone might still exist somewhere, silently receiving unread messages from loved ones trying to reach her.
